ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

View the 2023 Track & Field Parent Meeting Presentation for important athlete and guardian information.

Track & Field is both a

team sport
and an

individual sport

Teams are scored as a team. Individuals obtain their personal stats (e.g., finish time, height/distance jumped). All grades, 9th – 12th graders, train together.

More than 2/3 of our athletes have achieved Scholar-Athlete status (weighted GPA of 3.3 or higher).

Our Events

Sprints

100m - This is an all-out sprint from the starting gun to the finish line, and perfecting the start is often the key to success. It is run on the track's straightaway.

200m - Similar to the 100m, but success in the 200m requires additional strength for the athletes to maintain pace over the entire distance. Most sprinters compete in both the 100m and 200m.

400m - This is the "long sprint" and requires a combination of speed, strength and endurance. It is one full lap around the track.

Jumps

Long Jump - Athletes sprint down a runway before leaping into a sand pit, and the longest jump wins. A board on runway marks the takeoff point, and the jump is ruled a foul if any part of the athlete's foot goes beyond the board before takeoff.

Triple Jump - Similar to the long jump, but athletes use their momentum from the runup to complete three separate jumps (a hop, skip and jump) to leap into the sand pit. Maintaining correct body position and alignment during the three jump phases is critical to completing a lengthy jump.

High Jump - Athletes run a curved approach to a raised, horizontal bar and then translate their forward motion into vertical motion by driving their bodies up and into the air to clear the bar before landing on a pad. Athletes get three attempts to clear each height.

Hurdles

110HH - This is an all-out sprint requiring technical skill as athletes must traverse 10 hurdles between the start and finish. Hurdlers use the same lead and trail leg over each hurdle.

300LH - Also known as the intermediate hurdles, this event requires speed, strength and endurance as athletes must clear 8 hurdles before the finish. Unlike the 110HH, athletes must be able to use either leg as the lead or trail to clear the hurdles effectively.

Relays

4 x 100m - Four athletes comprise a team, and each athlete runs 100m while carrying a baton before passing the baton to the next team member for the next leg. Each baton exchange must be made within a marked zone on the track, and precision of the baton passes is critical to success.

4 x 400m - Similar to the 4 x 100m, but each athlete runs a 400m leg before passing the baton to the next team member. This is typically the last contested event at a track meet.

Pole Vault

Athletes sprint down a runway carrying a long pole which they plant in a box at the end of the runway to catapult themselves up and over a raised, horizontal bar before landing on a pad. Like the high jump, athletes get three attempts to clear each height.

Distance

800m - This is the "short distance" and covers two laps around the track. This event requires a combination of endurance, speed and a strong finish, and it is well-suited to 400m sprinters with endurance and 1600m runners with finishing speed.

1600m - The relationship between the 1600m and 800m is similar to that between the 200m and 100m in that they require the same basic skill set with some additional strength and endurance to cover the additional distance. It is four laps around the track.

3200m - This is the longest high school track event and is eight laps around the track. Exceptional endurance and good finishing speed are needed, and many cross-country athletes gravitate to this event during track season.

Throws

Shot Put - The shot is a steel ball, and the competition is to see who can put, or throw, the shot the farthest. A circle delineates the fair area from which the put must be made.

Discus - Athlete rotate through a series of momentum-generating spins before launching the discus down the field, and the farthest throw wins. A cage surrounds the circular throw area to protect bystanders and other athletes from errant throws.
