The Adam Frand Award:
It was August of 1998. Adam Frand and a couple of friends went on a bike ride in Venice Beach. Adam was set to begin his senior year in the fall. An honor student, member of the Academic Decathlon Team, well-liked among his peers, and an anchor leg of what, at that time, was the fastest 4 x 100-meter relay team Mira Costa’s Track program had seen, Adam had a bright future ahead of him. He and his friends took a break from their bike ride and stopped for a glass of lemonade. Minutes later Adam collapsed, and died from what was a previously undetected heart problem. Needless to say, Adam’s death shook the entire Costa community, and especially the Track and Field team. The friends with him that day didn’t run their senior year. The following spring, a tradition was started in Adam’s name: The Adam Frand Memorial Award. This award is given to two senior athletes, one boy and one girl, who best exemplify the aspects of Adam’s character:
DILIGENCE, LOYALTY, COMPETITIVENESS, AND DEDICATION.

In Memorium:
Coach Bob Fish
Robert Fish’s booming voice and gruff persona was a staple at Mira Costa for 23 years where he served as cross country and track and field coach. He also was the school’s athletic director for 10 years. Whether it was in Fisher Gym keeping student spectators in line during a volleyball match with rival Redondo or on the field yelling for his athletes to push themselves in a race, his voice needed no amplification.
Fish passed away in 2012 after battling long-term health complications and cancer. He will forever be remembered as an integral part of our track family for his kindness and compassion.
